Ode to a Craving

You’re sitting on the sofa or

you’re driving in your car,

when all of a sudden it hits you–

an urgent need for a CANDY BAR!!

Your stomach isn’t growling and

you’ve just finished lunch,

but all your mind can contemplate

is something sweet that will CRUNCH!!

At first you want some ice cream,

but will that do the trick?

You’ll have to follow sweet with salty,

maybe a spicy hot BEEF STICK.

You’ve been following your eating plan

you can’t just blow it all.

How do you make it through the torture?

Your self esteem will take a FALL.

On one shoulder is the CRAVING DEVIL

Dolly Madison is her name

but on the other is the CRAVING ANGEL,

beating cravings is Judith Beck’s game!

While Dolly would tell you “Just one bite won’t hurt,”

Dr. Beck would remind you “It’s no reason for alert.”

To conquer your cravings, you can’t hear the devil’s voice,

you must STAND FIRM and give yourself NO CHOICE!

It can’t last forever, it will soon go away

and you will be proud you made it through another day.

If mind tricks don’t work, then you must change behavior.

Distance yourself from the foods that you savor.

Go clean the bathroom, go walk the dog or

enjoy another post on Southern Fried Fatty’s blog!

You can combat the stress with a breathing technique.

Slowly breathe for three minutes and with each exhale out,

the resistance muscle will get stronger and the giving-in muscle weak.

OR… You could be mistaking thirst for hunger. Go drink some water or a low-cal soft drink.

  • Isn’t it amazing how it just comes out of nowhere, those cravings? You’re just minding your own business and whamm-0, “Why NOT have a _________.”

Good points and suggestions, SFF! Thanks!

  • Great advice, SFF. I’ve found that my cravings are usually gone within a minute or two. As long as I wait before acting, I’m usually OK.

  • You rock! I love the poem! It makes me want to dig out the response cards I gave up on a few weeks ago. Did I give up on them or did I give up on me? We all know the answer to that.
And, to be honest, I had one of these moments yesterday. I really wanted a Blizzard (Dairy Queen is the devil), but I got a frozen yogurt from McDonalds and it hit the spot. Now I did drive around for 10 minutes to eat it because I didn’t want to have to deal with comments from co-workers…the ones that think that WW is a cult because I love my slider, or that can’t understand how I can have ice cream while losing weight…
    Sorry I ramble…it’s the way I am!
Hope you have a great day!

Krissie- You should look at your Give Yourself Credit Response card. You should give yourself credit because you chose the Mickey D’s instead of the DQ! I bet if you sprinkled the ice cream with Metamucil, it would add enough fiber to make it a really low point treat. :-)

  • I love your writing style!
I thought if I posted a very curious posting on my blog chances are more people might take a peek at what you wrote.

Many times “1/2 is more” but something as clever as you’ve written “less is more”.

Thanks Jay! I’d love to take credit for the ideas about battling cravings, but as you know it’s all in THE BOOK. I just sat down and made it rhyme. Thanks for the post on your blog too.

  • I wish resisting got A LOT easier.
